Powered by a four-rotor R26B rotary engine producing 700 horsepower and screaming to 9,000 rpm, it became the first and only Japanese car, and the only rotary-engined car, to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans outright. When it crossed the finish line, Mazda’s mechanics wept. The sound of that R26B is still considered by many to be the greatest noise a racing car has ever made.
